Plantation Shutters for a Home Renovation in Wandsworth Posted on 11 Sep 14:00 , 0 comments

We recently completed a full house window dressing installation for a family undergoing a complete renovation of their terraced home in Wandsworth, London. The project included custom window solutions for bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas, and a home office, with a strong focus on privacy, light control, and long-term flexibility.

The clients requested neutral window coverings that would work well on their own but also complement additional soft furnishings, such as curtains, in the future. Plantation shutters were selected as the ideal solution for their timeless appeal, functionality, and ability to layer effortlessly with other window treatments.

Bathrooms

For the bathrooms, we recommended and installed shutters from our Java range — crafted specifically for high-moisture environments.

These waterproof shutters are ideal for wet or humid spaces, offering durability without compromising style.

Bedrooms, Office and Living Room

For the remaining rooms, including the bedrooms, office, and living room, the Cuba range was selected. As our entry-level hardwood option, Cuba combines a durable MDF and hardwood core frame with solid hardwood louvres—offering an affordable yet premium and practical finish.

The Cuba panels are also lighter than full MDF shutters, making them more suitable for larger windows. This weight advantage allows us to hinge up to four panels together, offering greater flexibility in design and configuration.

To maintain consistency throughout the home, all shutters were specified in a Tier-on-Tier configuration, finished in Silk White with a 76mm louvre and central tilt rods for a classic look and enhanced light control.

Integrated Room Darkening Blinds

To enhance light blocking and acoustic insulation in the bedrooms, we installed integrated room darkening blinds behind the shutters. This combination of Honeycomb corded blinds and shutters provides excellent blackout performance and noise reduction—ideal for bedrooms and nurseries. All systems were installed with child-safe mechanisms for peace of mind.

Additional Blinds

  • Roller blinds were added to bedroom windows with Juliet balconies, offering privacy without obstructing the view.
  • A Velux blind was also fitted to a roof window, ensuring complete coverage and effective light control.

The Shutter Shop has spent more than 35 years helping homeowners find made-to-measure window treatments that work with the character and practical needs of their homes.

This article remains at its original URL as part of our complete journal archive. Its subject connects to the same specialist guidance our surveyors provide today: considering the window proportions, room, privacy requirements, light and the right product material before confirming a design.

A considered approach

Shutters are made to order, so good decisions begin with careful measuring and a clear understanding of how the room is used. Full height, café style and tier-on-tier panels each manage light and privacy differently, while bay windows, special shapes and wide openings need their own design response.

Our team can show you the current range of materials, colours, louvre sizes and hardware during a free home survey.

For confident DIY customers, selected shutter styles can also be measured and configured online. More complex bay, shaped and tracked installations are best discussed with our professional measure-and-fit team.
