Are Shutters a suitable window dressing for UPVC Windows? Posted on 27 Feb 13:25 , 0 comments
UPVC windows are an increasingly popular choice for homeowners because they are very low maintenance and energy efficient. They are also a cheaper alternative to timber windows. We are often asked whether it is possible to install our shutters on UPVC windows or UPVC conservatories. We pride ourselves on installing our shutters to all sorts of unique windows, so the answer is often yes you can, but it does have to be considered on a case by case basis and we would always advise you to get in touch to ask for our opinion

If you are looking to install shutters on your UPVC windows there are a few important considerations to keep in mind
- Where possible we try to avoid drilling into UPVC. However sometimes it is necessary to get a secure fixing and providing the screw locations are carefully positioned no harm will be done. However we do recommend, especially if the windows are new, to check with your window manufacturer on their T&C’s for fitting shutters or blinds to the windows as it could invalidate their warranty
- If it is not possible to screw the shutter fixings directly into the plastic, there are a number of other ways to securely fix the shutters in place. For example, it may be possible for us to install battens or an additional frame to drill into instead, so always worth checking and evaluating the options for your windows.
- Larger window handles are much more common on UPVC windows so this needs to be accounted for when taking measurements for your shutters and also it is an important factor when considering what size louvres you can have. You want to make sure that the louvres / slats are able to open and close as intended.
- If you have window handles with your UPVC windows that protrude into the window recess, it may be necessary to buildout the shutter to accommodate these or potentially change the window handles to a slim line handle to avoid a chunky frame.

Whatever your windows, whatever your window frames, it is usually always possible to install shutters. However, we would always recommend you check with us. If we determine that shutters may not be the best choice for you to consider we have other blind options within our range that we can advise you on.

This article remains at its original URL as part of our complete journal archive. Its subject connects to the same specialist guidance our surveyors provide today: considering the window proportions, room, privacy requirements, light and the right product material before confirming a design.
A considered approach
Shutters are made to order, so good decisions begin with careful measuring and a clear understanding of how the room is used. Full height, café style and tier-on-tier panels each manage light and privacy differently, while bay windows, special shapes and wide openings need their own design response.
Our team can show you the current range of materials, colours, louvre sizes and hardware during a free home survey.
For confident DIY customers, selected shutter styles can also be measured and configured online. More complex bay, shaped and tracked installations are best discussed with our professional measure-and-fit team.
